Music Friday- Short People

My friend Jimmy and I were talking about the health care issue and Jimmy came up with this. Remember the song "Short People" by Randy Newman. Just substitute the words "sick people" for short people.  Pretty interesting.

On Wednesday of this week, Move-On promoted a Pro-single payer bill rally in Tulsa, OK. I stood on the corner of the block that the pro people occupied but there was 3 corners of anti-insure protesters. Signs included calling Obama a fascist, mispelling of the word constitution and other fear mongering. One lady was waving a flag and yelling at us asking if we had a job and calling us lazy. There were social workers in the crowd I supported. I had to walk to my car at the end of the rally past the anti crowd. Did I make a circle around them - NO - I walked on the sidewalk right thru them - I am a tough old lady.

After the rally, I needed a few things from the grocery store. It was about 9:30 when I walked into the store, got my things and stood at the checkout counter - four teenagers were working. "How many of you have healthcare?" I asked. Two young women and one of the young men had none, the other young man had insurance thru his mom's job. My few items were rung up and the uninsured young man asked if I needed to be walked out safely to my car - I am 57 and of course it is past dark here. I smiled and told the kids - "No," and then I misquote scripture, "Ye, though I walk thru the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil for I am the meanest bi*** in the parking lot." Old ladies using curse words usually sends teens into fits of laughter. I then said I hoped healthcare would pass. One of them was willing to see me safely to my car - I am willing to see them safely insured. These kids represent the my hometown - 3 out of 4 families are without insurance and the town I live in has a population of around 20,000 - and it is a low income area, much lower than some other neighboring cities.

Am I for getting some kind of insurance/medicaid/single payer system going? - you betcha! I am insured thru my husbands job as I own my own business, I am old enough and wise enough to know they are not creating some death panel for someone my age and I am all for ending wars of aggression and bringing home those dollars to be spent on my neighbors and their kids both for insurance and their education. It is the right thing to do.
